What You'll Need

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 2 cups apples (peeled, diced)
  • 1/2 cup walnuts (chopped)
  • 1/2 cup sugar (brown, packed)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon (ground)

How to Make It

  1. Heat the oven to 350 F.
  2. Cream together shortening, sugar, vanilla, and salt. Add eggs and beat well.
  3. In a separate bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, and soda; add to creamed mixture alternately with sour cream. Fold in diced apples.
  4. Pour batter into a greased 9-by-13-by-2-inch baking pan. Sprinkle top evenly with chopped walnuts. Combine brown sugar and cinnamon; sprinkle over the chopped walnuts.
  1. Bake apple sour cream coffee cake in the preheated oven for 25 to 30 minutes.
