Basil flavors this delicious homemade pizza dough, which can be made in a bread machine on the dough cycle, or it can be kneaded by hand. This recipe will cover both options, so you can choose which works best for you. This pizza dough is good with whatever you choose for toppings. This crust on a finished pizza also pairs well cinnamon sticks, a greek salad, or your favorite pizza sides of choice.


  • 2/3 cup water (lukewarm)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon basil (dried leaf)
  • 1 teaspoon yeast (active dry)

Steps to Make It

To Make in the Bread Machine

  1. Put all ingredients in the bread machine in the order recommended by your bread machine manufacturer.

  2. Select the dough cycle.

  3. Turn dough out of the bread machine. Roll out to fit the pizza pan.

  4. Cover lightly with plastic wrap and let rest for 10 minutes.

  5. Top with pizza sauce and toppings of your choice.

  6. Bake in a 400 F oven for 15 to 20 minutes, until crust, is nicely browned.

To Make by Hand

  1. Warm the water to about 100 to 110 F.

  2. Dissolve yeast in the water with the sugar.

  3. Combine yeast mixture with the remaining ingredients in a bowl until dough is well combined.

  4. Turn out onto a floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, 8 to 10 minutes.

  5. Grease and put in a bowl.

  6. Cover with a towel and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, until doubled.

  7. Turn out of the bowl and continue as above.
