Finding the best fried chicken can be a topic of controversy. Especially in the South, where fried chicken is more of a religion than just a dish. But, in my humble opinion, I think I may have actually found the best fried chicken, and it happens to be in Mississippi.
Tender and juicy, while light, crispy and not too greasy. Absolute Southern fried perfection. Allow me to introduce you to Walnut Hills Restaurant in Olde Town Vicksburg, Mississippi.
The day I tasted their chicken marks a milestone in my personal gastronomic history, as it is the best fried chicken I have ever tasted. Ever.Continue to 2 of 5 below.

Walnut Hills Restaurant
The world's best fried chicken recipe comes from chief cook, Miss Herdcine Williams. Miss Herdcine has been at Walnut Hills for over 30 years and is the second generation of family members who have played a key role in the success of this popular dining spot. Herdcine's mother, the late Ms. Alma Robinson, prepared her wonderful salads and slaw every day until she retired at age 70. Herdcine's son, Xavier, has been serving this delicious food for over 15 years, marking the third generation of the Williams family to grace the restaurant.Continue to 3 of 5 below.

Southern Plantation Cuisine
The menu at Walnut Hills Restaurant is described as "Southern Plantation Cuisine." From classic appetizers like the "House Made Pimento Cheese" and "Fried Green Tomatoes," to the "Blackened Catfish" and "Shrimp and Grits" entrees, their menu offers everything you love about homestyle Southern comfort food. Of course, let's not forget about the iconic "Caramel Cake" or a slice of "Pecan Praline Pie" for dessert.Continue to 4 of 5 below.

Diners can order their favorite items a la carte off the menu or enjoy an all-you-can-eat family-style service where you just sit back and allow the cooks to showcase their talents.
For larger parties, the restaurant offers round tables outfitted with a giant Lazy Susan. Rotating that fried chicken plate back around and closer to you is half the fun!
I was at the restaurant with a very large party (18 of us!) so we had to sit at a long table and pass the plates family-style. The plates just seemed to keep on coming! Besides the fried chicken, of course, the standouts were the baked beans, creamed corn, and buttermilk biscuits.Continue to 5 of 5 below.

Service with a Smile
Walnut Hills Restaurant is Southern hospitality at its best. Even with our large and somewhat boisterous party, our kind and generous server never missed a beat.
Here he is serving up our dessert options - blueberry crisp or apple cobbler.
We have decided to make it an annual tradition to visit Walnut Hills for National Fried Chicken day during our 4th of July family festivities. I can hardly wait until next year for another taste Miss Herdcine's perfect cayenne spiced fried chicken!
