The French press is a fast, affordable and all-purpose way to brew coffee-snob-approved coffee. Its fine mesh filter does a better job at extracting flavors from the grounds, rather than absorbing them like paper would, and makes for a complex and aromatic cup. (Plus, you can also use a French press to make cocktails in the evening.)
Bodum's sleek French press is a classic design, with a glass pitcher and shiny chrome holder and lid, and a 12-ounce capacity for a single mug at a time. But there are lots of other options, in sizes up to 51 ounces, black or white enamel colors, a cork top, and even with a shatterproof plastic pitcher.

"Terres de rêves" is French for "land of dreams," and that's where these mini mugs look like they've come from—or maybe the place that the caffeine inside will rescue you from. Belgian ceramicist Anita La Grelle chose the blue-and-grey and red-and-blue color scheme options to look like mountains, caves, and icebergs, and despite their designer look, they're completely dishwasher- and microwave-safe. In 1933, an Italian named Alfonso Bialetti created the original Moka pot. It's a marvel of fluid engineering, using stovetop (or campfire) heat to force pressurized steam through grounds in a self-contained filter to make concentrated, espresso-style coffee. But it's also a marvel of design, with an iconic angular shape that's recognized around the world. (And it's really easy to use.)
Almost a century later, Bialetti's company still makes the Moka with essentially the same design, engraving a caricature of the mustachioed Alfonso himself into every one. The compact and portable Moka Express can make three (1- to 1.5-ounce) "shots" of espresso at a time and requires no additional equipment besides coffee and water. The built-in filter funnel will last up to 10 years (and is replaceable), and the whole thing cleans up by just rinsing out with water. You don't even have to put it away in a cabinet, because it looks like a work of art on the stove.

The Sill
The coffee we drink every day is grown in faraway places like Africa, South America, and Southeast Asia, but the same shrub that coffee beans come from also makes a lush, low-maintenance houseplant (and conversation piece). Coffea arabica thrives in indirect light, only needs watering once every other week, and grows big, glossy dark-green leaves that stand out on a shelf or table. (Just don't expect a harvest of home-grown beans; coffee is very unlikely to make fruit when grown indoors in a small pot.)
The Sill lets you choose from four different pot styles in many different colors, which is a nice way to personalize the gift to the recipient's style, and you can also add a ceramic gift message pop that comes sticking out of the soil.

Fresh, whole beans, ground just before brewing, yield the best-tasting coffee, and the best way to grind coffee beans is with a burr grinder, which crushes them into uniformly sized bits. Electric burr grinders can be quite expensive, but the Hario Skerton Plus delivers great results with a manual crank and a much more reasonable price tag. It can grind 3.5 ounces of beans at a time, enough for at least two large pots, but it's small enough to store in a cupboard or even take on a camping trip. Unless the milk has been steamed and whipped into a an airy froth, it's not a cappuccino; it's just coffee with milk in it. The dairy in lattes, macchiatos, cappuccinos, and other Starbucks drinks is there for texture as well as flavor, and a splash of milk from a carton just isn't the same.
From by the people behind the Nespresso machine and coffee pods, the Aeroccino4 is a machine designed exclusively for making milk froth. Almond Cow
Whether made from almonds, soybeans, oats, or any of an array of other non-dairy ingredients, plant-based milks are very popular, especially in coffee. It's not all that complicated to make your own, but the hours of soaking, followed by messy blending and straining, make that a less-than-appealing proposition.
Enter the Almond Cow. You put a cup of base ingredients in its filter basket, fill the machine with water, press the cow-shaped button on top, and...that's it. In about a minute, the Almond Cow makes between 5 and 6 cups of non-dairy milk, separating out the solids for easy cleanup. (The website has recipes for turning the leftover pulp into breakfast bowls and even cookies to reduce food waste.) This is an expensive appliance, but it's a money saver in the long run, as a cup of almonds costs about 30 percent less than an equivalent amount of almond milk at the grocery store. (That's more like 90 percent for oats.)
But the real strength of the Almond Cow for a coffee lover is that it lets you create your own custom creamer blends. You're not limited to putting a single ingredient in the machine at a time. Why not a combination of almonds and oats with a cinnamon stick for a zingy morning cup? Coconut, cashews, and pie spices for a pumpkin spice latte? The options are endless.

The more the beans are exposed to it, the more their flavor will fade, so it's important to store them in an airtight container. This might make some coffee snobs cringe, but a Keurig machine is a really convenient way to get consistent coffee, fast, and there is a surprising array of different coffees (and other beverages) available in K-Cup form. (You can even buy a special reusable filter that lets you use any coffee in a Keurig.) When our Lab tested Keuring machines, the K-Café came out on top thanks to its amazing versatility: It combines a standard coffee maker, espresso machine, and milk frother into one convenient machine. It has a 60-ounce water reservoir that can make four different cup sizes of coffee, as well as an extra-concentrated 2-ounce espresso-style "shot." The frother makes two different textures of foam, and can heat milk or leave it cold.

If you order an espresso in Italy, it'll typically come boiling-hot, served in a tiny little cup that's apt to burn your fingers. Some aficionados consider that part of the experience, but for the rest of us, these stylish glass cups are ideal. The double-walled construction insulates the hot coffee from your hands, which keeps the liquid hotter longer and protects sensitive fingertips. The material looks delicate, but it's sturdy borosilicate glass, which can survive a surprising amount of punishment, including being sent through the dishwasher.
Love the design but want more capacity? De’Longhi sells the same style glasses in cappuccino (9.1-ounce) and latte (11.1-ounce) size.

Measuring out a consistent amount of coffee grounds every time is one of the keys to making great coffee, but nobody said an accurate measuring device has to be boring and utilitarian. Made by a woodworker in Washington, D.C., these tools incorporate a precise tablespoon (0.5-ounce) measuring scoop and a stylish hand-turned wooden handle. They're available in several colors each made from a different type of wood, including maple and walnut as well as some more exotic choices like the reddish-orange padauk. There are an array of coffee-brewing methods out there, but almost every one calls for ground coffee in some form. There are also a few different ways to grind coffee beans, but the best of those is the burr grinder, specifically the conical burr grinder, whose grinding parts spin the slowest, generating the least heat and agitation, both of which can damage the delicate flavors of single-origin and other high-end beans.
Conical burr grinders are also the most expensive models of grinder, but the Baratza Encore delivers fantastic performance at a mid-level price. It boasts 40 grind settings so the coffee-nerd recipient can truly fine-tune their brew, and the grounds bin can hold 5 ounces at a time, enough to make coffee for a pretty large brunch party. This best-selling grinder is also easy to clean and virtually noiseless.

For many fans, making pour-over coffee becomes a ritual. Measuring out and grinding coffee, boiling the kettle, streaming out water slowly and meditatively—they make for a few mindful minutes to start the day. But when it's 7 a.m. and you need your caffeine, all those steps become a bit more difficult to focus on. This machine puts everything you need in one place, with a digital timer built into a kitchen scale accurate down to the tenth of a gram. The slim device can stow away in a drawer or against a wall when not in use, though you may want to leave it on the counter so you don't have to find it for those early-morning pour-over sessions.

“Whatever you already have in your house should be enough to make a good cup of coffee. But in terms of consistency, a scale helps you dose out the right amount of grounds every time. I’ve seen recipes that use tablespoons, but even if you use the same number of tablespoons, the amount of grams can really vary.” — Nigel Price, Founder and Owner of Drip Coffee Makers in New York City
Toddy Cold Brew Coffee Maker System

You don't have to drink coffee hot to truly appreciate its complexity. Cold brewing creates a coffee concentrate that's rich in flavor but also meant to be enjoyed over ice. Toddy's deceptively simple system has a plastic pitcher that holds grounds and lets water drip slowly through them into the glass decanter below. The secret is the (reusable) felt filters, which catch even the smallest bits of bean and ensure the final product isn't gritty. It might look a little clunky, but it takes 24 hours to turn a 12-ounce bag of coffee into almost 40 ounces of cold-brew concentrate—enough for more than a dozen servings. (The decanter comes with a lid and stores easily in the fridge after brewing is complete.) For a coffee-loving friend who lives in a warmer climate, this might be the perfect choice.

Mr. Black Cold Brew Coffee Liqueur
Mr. Black is a truly artisanal coffee liqueur, made from beans roasted in house and wheat vodka distilled in house at a facility in coffee-hub Australia. The coffee is infused in water without heat, cold brew-style, making for an intensely flavored liqueur that avoids a lot of acidity or bitterness. It's bottled at 50-proof, a bit higher than typical liqueurs, which helps give it a big coffee punch in comparatively small volume, with gentle sweetness from cane sugar. Mr. Black was our top pick to use in an espresso martini, and it's also very nice over ice as an after-dinner sipper. Just be warned: It's as caffeinated as standard cold brew.

Stumptown Coffee Roasters
Based in Portland, Oregon, Stumptown Coffee Roasters prides itself on its longstanding relationships with growers around the world, which gets it access to very rare and very special beans that nobody else can find. This coffee is perhaps its finest and rarest, available seasonally in very limited quantities. Pacamara is the name of a coffee varietal, a strain developed in El Salvador that has extra-large beans and intense fruit and floral flavors, something unusual for Latin American coffee. The world-renowned pacamara grown by Guatemalan farm El Injerto has won coffee's prestigious Cup of Excellence competition seven times, and those are the beans in this very special bag. (Sold out? Waking up to a fresh cup of hot coffee is a lovely experience, and this clever device lets you do that quite literally. Load it up the night before with grounds and water, set the alarm, and it automatically starts making a cup of pour-over to be ready exactly when the alarm goes off. The aroma might even wake you up before the sound does. (You can also adjust the settings so the coffee is ready 5, 10, or 15 minutes after the alarm, or simply start brewing at the press of a button.)
The concept is a little gimmicky—and the price extravagant—but there is a legitimately fancy coffee machine attached to this alarm clock, with a 500-watt induction boiler and a system of glass tubing and "shower head" dripper for optimally slow-pouring water. The wooden tray that sits atop the electronics is removable to use for serving, and a USB port in the back lets you charge your phone while you sleep. There's even a refrigerated compartment for a flask of milk.

What to Look for in a Gift for a Coffee Lover
Brewing method & compatibility
There are so many different ways to make coffee that supplies and accessories for one method might not work with another. Something used for making pour-over coffee, for example, would be a great gift for someone who uses a Chemex but not so much for a home barista who owns an espresso machine. If you don't know how your recipient makes their java, coffee beans themselves are always a good option, or a mug, insulated flask, or other way of drinking brewed coffee.
Freshness
If you're giving coffee, whole-bean is generally a better choice than ground, as it's less susceptible to oxidation and will stay fresher longer. (You do need a coffee grinder to brew with whole beans, but most anybody who loves coffee enough to merit a coffee-based gift already owns one.) Pre-filled pods like those from Nespresso and Keurig are designed with freshness in mind, though you should definitely make sure the recipient owns a Nespresso or Keurig machine before you buy any.
Return policy
Even knowing some details about how your recipient makes their coffee, it's still possible to miss the mark—everybody's taste is a little different—or buy something the person already has. It's always a good idea to make sure items are returnable and include a gift receipt.
Why Trust The Spruce Eats?
This piece was written by Derek Rose, the coffee and tea expert for The Spruce Eats. He researches a variety of coffee products, from measuring scoops to commercial espresso machines, and interviews field experts for their insight. He typically makes coffee with the Bodum Brazil French Press—a great budget option, especially for those who prefer non-electric brewers.
The Spruce Eats commerce writer Jason Horn, who's been writing about food and drinks for more than 15 years, updated this guide. His preferred brewing method at home is a French press, and he takes his coffee black with a little sugar.
