Best Ranch Dressings

The Spruce Eats / Lecia Landis

Out of all the condiments in the world, ranch is not only one of the most popular, but also the most adaptable. What started out as salad dressing has become a household staple and an addition to foods like chicken wings or other appetizers and dips for meat, pizza, and vegetables. It’s also used in many recipes for sandwiches, casseroles, marinades, and more. Flavors are added to give it a slightly different taste, creating lots of options to choose from.

If you’re a ranch lover, chances are you’ve tried many different types. Here are our favorites in categories like buttermilk, avocado, bacon, and even vegan.

Best Overall

Hidden Valley Ranch Dressing

Hidden Valley Ranch Dressing

Amazon

What We Like
  • Classic taste

  • Thick

  • Gluten-free

What We Don’t Like
  • Lots of ingredients

There’s a reason Hidden Valley is the face of ranch dressing since its beginnings nearly 70 years ago when the company created the condiment—it’s all about what’s inside each bottle. The thick, creamy, slightly tangy taste is what many associate with the taste of ranch. It was my first ranch dressing experience, and I am sure there are others like me out there, too.

Things like buttermilk, egg yolk, garlic, onion, other herbs, and vinegar make up the ingredients, and while we don’t love that there are other items on the list we can’t pronounce, a little goes a long way and it is gluten-free.

The iconic and versatile flavor pairs wonderfully with chicken nuggets, or, dare we say it, pizza, but also things like a Buffalo Chicken Grilled Cheese, a Turkey Bacon Ranch Sandwich, a Chicken Bacon Ranch Casserole, Bacon Ranch Pasta Salad, and more. Hidden Valley knows its flavor is a household favorite, so much so that it also offers ranch seasoning and ranch dip mix packets.

Best Buttermilk

Kraft Deluxe Ultimate Ranch Salad Dressing

Kraft Deluxe Ultimate Ranch Salad Dressing

Amazon

What We Like
  • Added dill

  • Peppery

  • Perfectly tangy

What We Don’t Like
  • Made with dried buttermilk

Although Kraft’s take on ranch dressing is made with dried buttermilk, it is still the exact consistency that makes it perfect to mix into any salad. But just a little goes a very long way.

What we love most is the added dill in the recipe. Combined with the sweet buttermilk, this gives the ranch the perfect amount of tang. The extra pepper is a plus, too, to mellow out the zest. However, it may not be the ranch for everyone—especially kids or those with sensitive taste buds—as the flavor is elevated in almost every way.

This is a sauce that truly lives up to its "deluxe" name. Kraft's other sauces in this line, like Caesar, Italian, and Garlic & Parmesan, are also bold in flavor. In the end, you would think that a lot of taste means it will cost you more, but luckily that isn't the case here.

Best for Dipping

Litehouse Homestyle Ranch Dressing & Dip

Litehouse Homestyle Ranch Dressing & Dip

Amazon

What We Like
  • Not too thick

  • In a jar not a bottle

  • Smooth

What We Don’t Like
  • On the saltier side

Compared to ranch dressings in bottles made for pouring right over salads, this one comes in a jar or tub. This makes scooping some out or dipping into it super easy—the wide mouths mean long, tall veggies like carrots and celery, or even wider things like broccoli, cauliflower, or chicken wings, dip without a mess. It also makes measuring simple. Small measuring spoons fit with lots of extra room if you are using the ranch for a savory sauce or another recipe. (It is available in a bottle if that is your preferred container, though.)

Lighthouse’s ranch dressing also is thinner than others, meaning you get the right amount of ranch each time instead of a glob. Despite this, it is still smooth and flavorful thanks to buttermilk, egg yolk, sour cream, vinegar, garlic, onion, and a pinch of sugar. It may taste a bit saltier than others, so keep that in mind when building a veggie or dip tray.

Best Vegan

Organicville Non-Dairy Ranch Dressing

Organicville Non-Dairy Ranch Dressing

Amazon

What We Like
  • No added sugar

  • Still has a buttermilk taste

  • Contains no soy

What We Don't Like
  • Thinner than others

Like most non-dairy alternatives to dairy-filled favorites, vegan ranch isn’t a 100 percent copycat for the thick, buttermilk dressing other brands offer. However, innovations in the plant-based world mean there are decent non-dairy options out there.

We love the Organicville Non-Dairy Ranch Dressing for the kick it has and its unique fillings. The ingredients include several found in traditional ranch dressing, like vinegar, oil, onion, garlic, and pepper, but swaps like coconut cream, apple juice, and lemon juice keep it vegan and tangy. It is definitely not as thick as dairy ranch. Because of this, we highly recommend you use it for salads or in wraps or sandwiches, as it coats foods well and won't be as runny mixed in with other things. For anyone who is vegan, dairy-free, or watching their milk intake, it still gets the job done for dipping or dripping.

Best Bacon

Stonewall Kitchen Bacon Ranch Dressing

Stonewall Kitchen Bacon Ranch Dressing

Amazon

What We Like
  • No sugar

  • Bacon is very small

  • Made with whole eggs

What We Don’t Like
  • A little goes a long way

Ranch and bacon go together like peanut butter and jelly, and Stonewall Kitchen combines them perfectly into one bottle. The bacon bits in this ranch are very small—which is a good or bad thing depending on your preference. We like the tiny pieces because the dressing doesn’t change the texture or add any crunch to whatever you put it on or dip into it. However, if you prefer larger bacon bits, feel free to add some!

Since it is very flavorful, you don’t need as much of this bacon ranch as you may think. It contains a blend of onion, white vinegar, garlic, buttermilk, cayenne pepper, carrots, and celery and is super flavorful. It is thick—thanks to the use of the whole egg and not just egg yolks—but still coats well. It is slightly more expensive than other bottled options out there but doesn't require any of the added steps of making homemade ranch plus bacon.

Best Chipotle

Briannas Chipotle Ranch Dressing

Briannas Chipotle Ranch Dressing

Amazon

What We Like
  • Spicy take on the original

  • Vegetarian

What We Don’t Like
  • Not as hefty

Ranch is already an all-purpose dressing, and that is only confirmed by how many flavors are added to the classic recipe. Briannas Chipotle Ranch Dressing combines the buttermilk tanginess of regular ranch with tart apple cider vinegar and spicy chipotle and paprika. Yet, it also has some cane sugar to cut some of the heat. Other ingredients that make up this blend of flavors include apple cider vinegar, rice wine vinegar, onion, and garlic.

We do miss the egg yolk in this ranch dressing, which usually adds to the thickness. But it clings to whatever food it is used with—wings, veggies, potatoes, roasted corn, mac and cheese, and more—to give it a creamy kick. In addition, Briannas Chipotle Ranch Dressing is still gluten-free and vegetarian, so it can be added to many different plates depending on specific diets.

Best Avocado

Tessemae's Organic Avocado Ranch Dressing

Tessemae's Organic Avocado Ranch Dressing

Target

What We Like
  • Super creamy

  • Certified organic

  • Herby

What We Don’t Like
  • Contains no buttermilk

This ranch dressing from Tessemae’s swaps buttermilk for avocado. While we do slightly miss the thickness traditional buttermilk brings, the avocado makes up for it with its creaminess and smoothness. You won't be bombarded with avocado flavor, but the fruit doesn't have a lot of taste to begin with, so if you want more you can add some fresh. Just mash it up and mix it into the dressing! (This will make it heftier, too.)

There's also an added ingredient in this ranch dressing that really intrigues us: mustard. This isn't found in any of the other ranch dressings we have on our list, but the slight sourness it adds works. Otherwise, the dressing is tangy, herby, and great on salads. Most ingredients are certified organic, and the whole eggs used are cage-free—another plus.

Final Verdict

For the most classic, traditional ranch, there’s no better option than the brand that started it all, Hidden Valley Ranch. Anyone following a vegan diet doesn’t have to miss out, though, because Organicville Non-Dairy Ranch Dressing is a great alternative.

What To Look For in Store-Bought Ranch Dressings

Ingredients

There are a few ingredients that make ranch dressing ranch dressing—like buttermilk, garlic, onion, spices, and egg yolk/mayonaisse/sour cream. If you are making some at home, these are at the top of the ingredients list. But innovations have proved ranch is versatile and can be delicious paired with other things. Many varieties now include unique blends of spices, herbs, oils, and flavors to create new options like chipotle, avocado, non-dairy, and other ranches. They all still have the slight tang and savory taste as the original.

Consistency

What kind of texture you like in different foods is very personal. Luckily, not every ranch dressing is made the same, even with a few core ingredients. Various options are hearty while others are lighter. Thicker ranch dressings are great for dipping wings, veggies, pizza, and more. The thinner ones coat salad easier and also work as a marinade. Then there are ones in the middle of the spectrum that are great for whatever you want to use it for.

Oftentimes the bottle will mention some adjectives or pictures describing the ranch. Look for words like creamy, smooth, velvety, and rich for thicker options, or pictures of salads or vegetables for thinner dressings.

Refrigerated vs. Shelf-Stable

Ranch dressing is usually in two places at the grocery store: a refrigerated section and an inner aisle. Depending on the ingredients, some are shelf-stable before being opened. Things like dairy need to be kept refrigerated to keep them from going bad. Yet, even if you buy a bottled ranch dressing from the shelf-stable aisle, it will most likely require refrigeration after being opened to prevent bacteria from growing.

FAQs

What is ranch dressing made of?

Buttermilk, herbs, spices, and some sort of other dairy product like egg, mayonnaise, or sour cream typically make up the backbone of every ranch dressing. Of course, some ingredients are added, taken out, or swapped for an alternative. For example, some ranch dressigns contain dried buttermilk in place of regular buttermilk. Others add an oil and egg yolk instead of mayo or sour cream. Additional flavors are also used—like jalapeño, chili powder, paprika, and more for a spicier taste or even lemon juice for a stronger tanginess.

Ranch has also been made into a vegan condiment by many brands. In this case the buttermilk and egg can’t be used, so oftentime these will use other thick and creamy foods like avocado or coconut cream to mimic the texture.

What is ranch dressing best for?

Ranch dressing was first introduced as a salad dressing in the 1950s but has since transformed into an all-around condiment paired with lots of foods. From chicken wings to marinades to pizza to dips, and of course, many different variations of salad, ranch dressing shines.

What makes restaurant ranch dressing so creamy?

Any restaurant that has salad, wings, or other meat on the menu has ranch dressing available. Some make it in-house with all the traditional ingredients and sell it to customers. Others buy it in bulk sizes from specialty restaurant stores. You can always ask your server the next time you’re out to eat to find out exactly where the ranch is coming from…they may even give you the recipe!
