A vegan eating style excludes all animal products, including meat, seafood, dairy, and even honey. Fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, plant-based proteins like tofu, and certain starches are traditionally what vegan diets focus on. But eating a vegan diet may be challenging for some, especially if you’re short on time or aren’t particularly fond of cooking (or cleaning).
That’s where vegan meal delivery services come in. These time-saving services make it easier to adhere to a vegan diet while eliminating some of the guesswork of identifying vegan ingredients. We tested and evaluated dozens of vegan meal kits on factors like menu variety and cost to find the best ones.

What Our Testers Say
We love the convenience that Hungryroot offers, allowing us to order groceries and plan meals for the week in one fell swoop. And, with thousands of recipes in its repertoire, the possibilities for easy, tasty vegan meals are virtually endless.
What Is Hungryroot?
Hungryroot is like a big online grocery store that sells individual grocery items and boasts a “virtual cookbook” of over 4,000 recipes to use them in. Subscriptions are based on weekly deliveries. New subscribers begin with an online quiz and then Hungryroot creates a custom grocery plan; customers can edit their items each week or select exactly what they want. Ingredients and recipes can be mixed and matched. Customers can choose from two or four servings a week. You can add tofu, beans or lentils, or plant-based meal alternatives for vegan plans.
How Much Does It Cost?
Hungryroot’s pricing will depend on what you order each week. Plans start at $70 per week and increase based on the amount of food you order and which groceries you select. Shipping is free for all orders over $70.
When placing your order, Hungryroot will give you a certain amount of “credits” based on your plan size. Each grocery item and recipe is assigned a credit value, and you’ll simply fill your cart with whatever you want until your credit value is reached.
How to Sign Up
When you first sign up for Hungryroot, you’ll complete a questionnaire to gauge your food preferences; this will help the company curate your cart with personalized suggestions.
Once that’s finished, you’ll set up your account and finalize the details of your weekly deliveries, including the number of recipes per week (from three to eight), the size of each recipe (either two or four servings), and the number of servings of breakfast, snacks, and sweets you’ll need (up to 12 for snacks and 10 for breakfast and sweets). You’ll also choose a free gift, like cookie dough or a “fresh veggie of the week." Then, you’ll head to checkout and enter your address, preferred delivery date, and payment info to place your order.
How to Make the Meals
Your Hungryroot order will arrive in a large, recyclable cardboard box with the ingredients nestled inside and chilled with ice packs. Meal kits come with printed recipe cards, which lay out the details and instructions for preparing each dish. Most recipes only require a few simple steps—think sautéing proteins, boiling pasta, and rough-chopping veggies—and many can be ready in under 20 minutes. While you’ll need to supply some ingredients from your pantry, like oil and salt, the main components of each dish will be included in the kit.
How the Food Tastes
Our Hungryroot order included the paneer and cauliflower tikka masala bowl, Thai peanut paneer and stir-fry veggie bowl, zesty shrimp taco salad, an organic blackberry yogurt cup, a coffee cake muffin, a mini nutty pumpkin bread, and plant-based chopped Chick'n (which we chose as our free gift).
The highlight of the entire delivery was the Thai peanut paneer dish. The crisp, fresh vegetables and perfectly firm paneer were covered in a rich and flavorful peanut sauce. We also loved the cauliflower and paneer tikka masala, which included a remarkably tasty sauce. The pumpkin bread and the coffee cake, however, were not our favorites, as the flavor was too earthy.
Price Range: $11.09–$13.59 per serving | What You Get: Fresh prepared meals | Skill Level: Beginner | Good For: Foodies, singles, busy folks who need quick dinners
What Our Testers Say
Our testers love the chef-crafted, heat-and-eat meals CookUnity offers, as well as the variety of cuisines represented in the menu. We also love the range of dietary preferences that CookUnity accommodates, from vegan and vegetarian to gluten- and dairy-free.
What Is CookUnity?
CookUnity lets you have an effortless, restaurant-quality dining experience right in the comfort of your home. Utilizing a network of regional hubs scattered across the country in major cities like New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles, CookUnity partners with award-winning chefs to create a diverse and expansive menu of gourmet prepared meals that only require reheating. While the menu will vary based on your location, you’ll have dozens of flavorful, globally inspired dishes to choose from each week. The menu accommodates multiple eating styles, including vegan, vegetarian, keto, and paleo, and you can filter the online menu to easily find what you need.
How Much Does It Cost?
CookUnity operates on a tiered pricing model where the more meals you order per week, the cheaper each one will be. If you opt for the smallest plan of four meals each week, you’ll pay $13.59 per meal. However, if you choose the largest plan of 16 meals, the cost drops to $11.09 per meal. Shipping is free with all orders.
How to Sign Up
To receive meals, you’ll first need to verify that you live within CookUnity’s delivery range, as the company currently only ships meals to certain regions of the U.S. From there, you’ll answer a few questions about your food preferences, and choose your plan size—either four, six, eight, 12, or 16 meals per week.
At this point, CookUnity will prompt you to set up an account with your name, email address, and password. Next, you’ll be directed to the menu to make your meal selections. At the top of the menu, you’ll find a series of icons that you can click to filter the choices based on your dietary preferences; to add a meal to your box, click the plus sign on the bottom right corner of the photo. You can also choose the date you’d like to receive your first delivery. Once your cart is full, click “continue” to checkout, where you’ll enter your delivery address and payment information to finalize your order.
How to Make the Meals
Since CookUnity’s meals come fully prepared and cooked, all you’ll need to do is reheat them until warmed through. Each meal will have heating instructions printed on the label, and, while the microwave is the quickest method, many of CookUnity’s chefs recommend the oven for best quality.
How the Food Tastes
For our CookUnity order, we chose Pat LaFrieda’s beef short ribs bourguignon, Einat Admony’s marinated chicken shawarma over Israeli couscous, Andres Mendez’s crispy pan-fried Cajun salmon, and Esther Choi’s wild mushroom bibimbap with cucumber kimchi.
Of these dishes, the wild mushroom bibimbap was the vegan option. It consisted of a variety of vegetables, including mushrooms, bean sprouts, carrots, and spinach, served over a bed of rice with a spicy gochujang sauce and a cucumber kimchi on the side. We really liked the way the flavors worked together in this dish—although we recommend adding the gochujang a little at a time to gauge the spice level.

What Our Testers Say
We love Daily Harvest’s extensive selection of fully plant-based foods at wallet-friendly prices, and we especially love the company’s sustainability angle—95% of the packaging is either reusable, recyclable, or compostable. Plus, since all Daily Harvest items come frozen, we appreciate the longer shelf life, which leads to less food waste.
What Is Daily Harvest?
Daily Harvest was founded nearly a decade ago by Rachel Drori, and it started out as a smoothie business with fruit and other ingredients packed in cups and delivered frozen to be whirled together in a home blender. It's since expanded to an affordable variety of meals, including breakfast oats, savory grain and veggie bowls, soups, snacks, flatbreads, and desserts, all of which are frozen. Everything on the menu is gluten-free and vegan, and the company prioritizes organic ingredients in its meals.
How Much Does It Cost?
All of Daily Harvest’s items are priced individually, ranging from $8.49 smoothies to $9.79 flatbreads. When placing an order, you’ll fill the box with however many items you would like, and the price will depend on what you select. To sweeten the deal, Daily Harvest offers a 10% discount on orders over $100, and shipping is free on your first order. (After that, it’s $9.99.) Each box does have to be more than $50, however.
How to Sign Up
You’ll need an account to order from Daily Harvest, so click the “Get Started” button to begin setting one up. First, you’ll enter your email address and ZIP code, and after clicking “Peep Menu,” you’ll choose your box size and add items to it. After your box is full, click through to checkout, where you’ll enter your delivery address and payment info, and specify which day you’d like to receive your order. Once everything is filled in, click “Place Order” and wait for your box to arrive.
How to Make the Meals
Most of the food comes in recyclable cups, which you’ll empty into a bowl for microwaving or a pot for the stovetop. You’ll find reheating instructions on the packaging for each item. Some items, like flatbreads, will need to be baked in an oven or toaster oven, while smoothies can be blended with a liquid of your choice, like almond or oat milk (which you’ll have to supply yourself). The cookie-dough-esque “bites” don’t require any prep at all—just take them out of the freezer, let them thaw for a few minutes, and enjoy.
How the Food Tastes
Our Daily Harvest order contained the following nine items: artichoke and spinach flatbread, broccoli and white bean soup, chaga and chocolate lattes, chickpea and coconut curry, ginger and greens smoothie, kabocha and chai oat bowl, lemon quinoa with butternut squash, raspberry and fig bites, and spinach and shiitake grits.
While we weren’t super impressed with the flatbread, everything else was tasty and enjoyable. We especially loved the spinach and shiitake grits, while the kabocha chai oat bowl tasted like pumpkin pie. The raspberry bites and the chocolate lattes were huge hits, as well. We also appreciated that we could control the level of seasoning on our end, though the savory dishes needed a few shakes of pepper and salt.
Price Range: $16.05–$18.17 per serving | What You Get: Fresh prepared meals | Skill Level: Beginner | Good for: Singles, busy individuals
What Our Testers Say
We love Sprinly’s small but unique selection of organic vegan meals, all of which are gluten-free and arrive fresh and ready to heat.
What Is Sprinly?
Sprinly offers a well-designed menu of single-serving meals prepared with organic ingredients. All dishes are vegan and gluten-free, and Sprinly employs a team of chefs, nutritionists, and doctors to ensure its meals are balanced and nutritious. While the menu is quite small, it rotates weekly so you won’t see the same things every time.
How Much Does It Cost?
Rather than pricing its meals individually, Sprinly opts for a weekly pricing structure that varies based on the size of the order. You can order six meals for $109, 12 meals for $199, or 18 meals for $289 each week, making the per-meal cost roughly $16 to $18. No matter how many meals you order, shipping is a flat rate of $9.99 per box.
How to Sign Up
Before you set up a Sprinly subscription, you can look through the online menu by clicking the button at the top of the homepage. If you like what you see, click “Get Started” to sign up. You’ll begin by choosing the number of meals you want each week—six, 12, or 18—and then you’ll enter your email and shipping address before continuing to the payment screen. Once you submit your payment, you’ll choose your meals for the week.
How to Make the Meals
Sprinly’s meals arrive fresh and fully cooked, so all you’ll need to do is reheat them before digging in. Each meal is packaged in a microwave-safe container, and you’ll find the specific heating instructions on the label. Some meals may even be eaten right out of the fridge, with no heating necessary.
How the Food Tastes
Our Sprinly order consisted of the citrus “detox” salad with beets and fresh oranges; roasted tahini “butter” sweet potatoes with red rice and sweet lemon kale; royal beet medallions with ancient quinoa and greens; Kenko spiralized vegetable bowl with tofu and shiitake; pasta primavera with gluten-free pasta and cashew “Parm;” and mac and “cheese” with steamed broccoli.
We found Sprinly’s meals to be fresh and flavorful, and not too restrictive, despite being fully plant-based. However, we did have a few issues with soggy noodles or wilted greens, which makes us think Sprinly’s shelf-life may be a bit of a challenge. If you’re using this service, we recommend eating your meals sooner rather than later for best results.
Price Range: $9.99–$13.49 per serving | What You Get: Frozen prepared meals and smoothies | Skill Level: Beginner | Good for: Singles, busy folks with little time to cook

Splendid Spoon is a great option for people who want to keep their freezers stocked with quick, gluten-free vegan meals. Since the food comes frozen, we love the long shelf life of Splendid Spoon’s meals, which can stay fresh for up to three months in the freezer.
What Is Splendid Spoon?
Splendid Spoon was founded in 2013 by Nicole Centeno, a chef, research biologist, and mother of three, to provide nutritious and accessible meals for busy people. The company’s entirely plant-based menu of prepared meals offers plenty of ways to get more vegetables into your diet. Choose from an assortment of smoothies, soups, noodle bowls, and “dishes,” which comprise everything from grain bowls to shepherd’s pie to vegan bolognese. Most of Splendid Spoon’s options are gluten-free and provide at least 3 grams of fiber.
How Much Does It Cost?
The total cost of your Splendid Spoon order will depend on what you select. Items are priced individually—smoothies are $9.99 each, soups are $12.49, and noodles and “dishes” are $13.49—and you can order seven, 14, or 21 items in every delivery. Shipping costs $12.99 for the 7-meal plan, but it’s free for the 14- and 21-meal plans.
How to Sign Up
To order from Splendid Spoon, you’ll need a subscription, so click the “Get Started” button on the homepage to set one up. You’ll start by picking your weekly box size (either seven, 14, or 21 items), and after clicking “Choose Your Meals,” you’ll be prompted to enter your email and ZIP code to verify that you’re within Splendid Spoon’s delivery area. If you are, you’ll be immediately directed to Splendid Spoon’s menu.
When you get there, your cart will be pre-filled with some of the company’s best-selling items, but you’re free to add or remove anything you want. When selecting your meals, you can filter the menu by multiple dietary preferences, such as “higher fiber” and “lower sugar,” and specify any food restrictions you may have. You can even filter the meals by health benefits, such as “heart healthy” and “immunity boosting,” and even texture (i.e. “creamy,” “hearty,” “light,” etc.).
Once your cart is filled, you’ll head to checkout, where you’ll enter your shipping address, preferred delivery date, and payment info to complete your order.
How to Make the Meals
Since all of Splendid Spoon’s food arrives fully prepared, all you’ll need to do is reheat it before enjoying. Smoothies come pre-blended and only require thawing. As for the soups, noodles, and dishes, you can reheat them in the microwave, on the stove, or in the oven, and heating instructions are included on the label for each item.
How the Food Tastes
Our Splendid Spoon order consisted of five smoothies and eight soups. Smoothies included cacao almond, blackberry basil, green matcha, power greens, and raspberry cacao; soups included red lentil dal, green tomatillo chili, lentil and kale, kimchi fried quinoa, cauliflower tikka, cauliflower potato, and butternut turmeric.
Splendid Spoon was a mixed bag when it came to taste and overall quality. We enjoyed the smoothies, with the cacao almond and raspberry cacao being the standouts of the bunch. These two smoothies were thick and filling, and the flavor was not too sweet, which we loved. On the other hand, the soups were a bit bland and could have benefited from some extra seasoning. Additionally, the textures of the soups were thinner and more watery than we expected.

From there, you’ll enter your payment information and delivery address before heading to the menu to pick your meals.
How to Make the Meals
Purple Carrot’s prepared meals only require reheating in the microwave or on the stovetop, and you’ll find heating instructions on the packaging for each meal. For meal kits, you’ll receive a recipe card with each kit which will lay out instructions for preparing each meal.

For our Purple Carrot order, we selected the Thai peanut noodles with gingered edamame and braised tofu; Vibrant Veggie burgers with curry mayo and fries; lemon poppy overnight oats; orzo broccoli romesco bowl with crispy sausage and braised white beans; buffalo kimchi noodles with crispy tempeh and zesty slaw; and the tamarind lentil dal with carrot biryani.
We were extremely pleased with the flavor and quality of each meal from Purple Carrot, with one tester mentioning that the Thai peanut noodle dish was “outrageously good.” The Vibrant Veggie burgers, made with Actual Veggies Orange Burgers. were another hit. This meal was so remarkable our tester started adding these Actual Veggies burgers to their regular grocery shopping list!

You’ll also get free shipping if you opt for the 12- or 18-item deliveries.
How to Sign Up
Click the “Get Started” button on the Mosaic website’s homepage to begin ordering. You’ll start by entering your ZIP code to verify that you live within Mosaic’s somewhat nebulous delivery area. (Its website states that Mosaic delivers to the East Coast, most of the West Coast, and several states in between, but it doesn’t specify exactly where.) If Mosaic is available in your location, you’ll be directed to the “Pick Your Plan” screen to choose how many meals you’d like to order each week—six, 12, or 18.
From there, you’ll make your selections. To add something to your box, click the aptly named “Add to Box” button underneath it. If you’d like more information on a particular meal, clicking its photo will give you a list of ingredients, nutrition facts, and preparation instructions. Once your box is full, click through to the order review page to choose your delivery date, frequency, and any instructions for the courier. After that, head to checkout to seal the deal.
How to Make the Meals
All of Mosaic’s food arrives frozen and will need to be stored in the freezer until you’re ready to eat it. Each meal will come with reheating instructions on the label, and most items can either be heated in the microwave or on the stovetop.
How the Food Tastes
Our Mosaic order consisted of the spicy dan dan noodles, buffalo cauliflower pasta bake, mac and greens, pozole verde, veggie kebab platter, and coconut chickpea curry.
While frozen vegan food isn’t often known for being stellar, our Mosaic meals certainly were! Our tester even mentioned that Mosaic’s meals are “honestly the best frozen plant-based food [they’ve] tasted.” The meals were deliciously plant-forward, and we found them to be more flavorful and with a better texture than most plant-based food you might find in the freezer aisle.

How We Test Meal Delivery Services
Our testing panel includes food writers, editors, researchers, dietitians, home cooks, professional bakers, and chefs. To capture the full experience of each service, our testers set up accounts, order meals, prepare and consume them before carefully evaluating the service on a range of criteria, including menu selection, pricing, availability, and, of course, flavor.
To date, we’ve sampled more than 1,000 meals from more than 50 meal delivery services—and our list keeps growing. We also retest services periodically to gather as much information about these companies as possible.
Our testers begin by setting up accounts to assess how the website and ordering process works. From there, they choose a selection of meals, making sure to include diverse meal compositions and flavor profiles.
When the meals arrive, our testers carefully document the unboxing process including counting the individual pieces of packaging materials. They also note any issues with the order, like wilted or damaged produce and missing ingredients.
Our testers photograph the entire cooking process from prep to plate. They follow each recipe’s exact directions and keep an eye on the clock to see if the company’s estimated cooking time matches the actual cooking time.
Then it’s time for the fun part: tasting the food. Our testers sample each meal they’ve cooked, noting anything they particularly like or dislike. We also encourage our testers to recruit family and friends to help taste the meals once they’re plated and served. This helps give a diverse range of insights and tasting notes to help our readers make informed decisions when choosing a meal delivery service.
Guide for Choosing a Vegan Meal Delivery Service
Are Vegan Meal Delivery Services Right for You?
There are myriad benefits to a vegan, plant-based diet. Scientists and researchers have found that maintaining a vegetarian or vegan diet can lower the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and even reduce prostate cancer risk. Some studies have also shown that eating a vegan diet can help with weight loss.
Even with many benefits, going “all plants” can leave room for your body to miss some key nutrients found in meats and dairy, as it can be difficult to get enough protein. It’s important to implement a diet that consists of healthy fats for your brain; plenty of protein, such as tofu, tempeh, lentils, soy milk, seeds, nuts, and plant-based meat alternatives to keep you satiated; other vitamins and minerals, such as calcium found in collard greens for bone health; and vitamin B12 found in nut-based milk and supplements.
Finding a vegan meal delivery service that suits your needs and offers healthful and thoughtful nutrient-dense meals and snacks can make your weekly mealtime prep easier and more nutritious.
Comparing Vegan Meal Delivery Services
With so many vegan meal delivery services on the market, it can be overwhelming to choose. To help make a decision, review these considerations:
Who is the vegan meal delivery service for? Are you single and cooking for one? A company like Daily Harvest can be an option. Need to feed a family? Purple Carrot may be a good choice.
What kind of service do you need? Are you on the road a lot and need a grab-and-go option such as Sprinly? Do you and your partner want to make simple meals in a matter of minutes? If so, then Hungryroot may be a good option.
What kind of time can you realistically commit to each meal? Do you want a frozen soup from Splendid Spoon that just needs a quick reheat? Or do you have a few minutes to cook each night and want to try a meal kit from a service like Purple Carrot or Hungryroot?
