- Chocolate Brownies:
- 4 ounces unsweetened chocolate
- 3/4 cup unsalted butter
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 3 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup chopped walnuts
- Hot Fudge Sauce:
- 2/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/4 cup malted milk powder
- 3/4 cup whipping cream
- 1/2 cup light corn syrup
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Optional Sundae Toppings:
- Vanilla ice cream
- Chopped nuts
- Chocolate curls
- Maraschino cherries
Gather the ingredients. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Line an 8-inch square baking pan with non-stick foil.
Place the unsweetened chocolate squares and butter in a large, microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high for 2 minutes or until the butter is melted. Remove from the microwave and stir until the chocolate is completely melted and incorporated.
Stir in the sugar until well combined.
Add the eggs and vanilla, stirring to combine.
Add the flour and stir to incorporate. Stir in the chopped walnuts.
Spread into the prepared pan. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until just set. Test for doneness by inserting a toothpick into the center of the brownies. The toothpick should come out sticky, but not runny. Do not overbake.
Cool completely on a wire rack. In the meantime, prepare the hot fudge sauce.
Combine the sugar, cocoa powder, malted milk powder, whipping cream, and corn syrup in a heavy saucepan. Stir over low heat until the sugar is dissolved. Bring to a simmer and cook, stirring constantly, for 4 minutes.
Remove from the heat, then stir in the butter and vanilla extract.
Cut the brownies into squares.
Place each brownie on a serving plate, then top with a scoop of ice cream and a drizzle of the hot fudge sauce.
Finish with any or all of your favorite toppings such as chopped nuts, sprinkles, chocolate curls, and, of course, a maraschino cherry on top.
The Ultimate Homemade Hot Fudge Sauce
The secret ingredient in this homemade hot fudge sauce is the addition of malted milk powder. This adds a unique toasty, almost buttery flavor to recipes and really makes this chocolate hot fudge sauce shine. You can use as little or as much as you like drizzled on top of a brownie a la mode.
If there is any remaining hot fudge sauce, it can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week. To reheat, gently warm over low heat in the top of a double boiler or in 30 second increments in the microwave.
