What would happen if you took a high-proof blended Scotch, mixed in some herbal cocoa flavors, and topped it all off with a shot of fresh carrot juice? Why, you would have a Bugs Cutty cocktail, of course!

This fantastic and very unique cocktail was created by Rob Krueger of the Brooklyn bar, Extra Fancy, and it is a fun experiment in taste that you really have to try to believe. I won't promise that you will like it, but it is an adventure and we all need that in our drinks from time to time.

The Bugs Cutty goes beyond a spiked carrot juice drink and is a marvel in flavor pairing. It begins with a robust Scotch, introduces you to the herbal pairing of two fascinating liqueurs, and brings in some fresh from the garden flavor.

The way that the Amaro Meletti and Chartreuse react against the whiskey and carrot combination is interesting and livens up the drink with waves of herb and even a hint of chocolate from the amaro. The finishing touch is that black pepper, which adds an even deeper dimension to an already dynamic drink.

  • 1 1/2 ounces Cutty Sark Prohibition Edition Scotch Whisky
  • 1/2 ounce Amaro Meletti
  • 1/2 ounce Yellow Chartreuse
  • 1/2 ounce lemon juice (fresh)
  • 1 1/2 ounces  carrot juice (fresh pressed)
  • Black pepper to taste

Steps to Make It

  1. Pour the ingredients into a cocktail shaker filled with ice.

  2. Grind black pepper on top for a garnish.

  • Cutty Sark Prohibition Edition is a special expression from the famous blended Scotch whisky brand that was named after the famous clipper ship. Bottled at 100 proof, this newer offering is a tribute to the Prohibition-era ship captain, William McCoy, who did his part in keeping quality booze in the hands of Americans. This famous smuggler was also the inspiration behind the phrase "The Real McCoy."
  • Amaro Meletti may require a bit of explanation for the average drinker because it is not a common ingredient in most bars. This is a bitter digestif (similar to the more popular Averna) that has been made for centuries by the Italian Meletti family. Known for their fine liqueurs, the amaro produced by Meletti is the most popular and uses a secret recipe of aromatic herbs to create a signature flavor that, oddly enough, tastes a lot like chocolate.
  • Carrot juice is easy and inexpensive to press fresh if you have a good electric juicer that can handle vegetables. If you do not have a juicer, carrot juice is available in most grocery stores and is a viable substitute. For the purest flavor, be sure to avoid the blended juices as many carrot juices available also include citrus and other fruits.

How Strong Is the Bugs Cutty?

The liquors outweigh the non-alcoholic mixers in the Bugs Cutty, which gives it a nice kick. This Cutty Sark expression is 100 proof, Yellow Chartreuse is 86 proof, and Amaro Meletti is 64 proof. With these brands in the recipe given, the drink is right around 22 percent ABV (44 proof) once mixed.
