The Sweetest Disguise: Burger Cupcakes
You may have seen the new look of the Hamburglar, but the sweetest disguise is a cupcake that looks like a burger. I first saw a burger cupcake back in 2008 at a luncheon. Clare Crespo, the author of one of the first cupcake craft book, Hey There, Cupcake, made these burger cupcakes. Everyone who attended were in awe of the cupcakes, and the burger cupcake went viral. These awesome cupcakes are actually fairly easy to make if you have the time, the patience and some food coloring.

First, Bake The Cupcakes: Chocolate And Vanilla
As much as I am a proponent of scratch baking, cupcake crafting is one exception to the rule. Cupcakes can be a canvas for creativity. These burger cupcakes are just as delicious using box cake mixes. Two things that are essential to successful cake mix baking is to make sure that the mix has a good expiration date and that the you don't over mix the cupcake batter. Let Cupcakes Be Cool and Naked
Burger cupcakes don't have to made all at once. In fact it is better to bake the cupcakes the night before so that they have cooled completely before slicing and assembly. Most professional cake decorators bake cakes two or three days in advance of decorating and assembly. Another thing is that burger cupcakes are naked until assembly. No need to make the frosting ahead of time. You can do it the day of assembly. Keep the cupcakes in a freezer bag so that they stay fresh.Continue to 4 of 7 below.

The Frosting is Key
For as much as the burger cupcake assembly is important, the frosting is key. For this step, I suggest to not use store-bought frosting unless there's a brand you really like. Food Coloring Brings The Burger Cupcakes Alive
As Dr. Frankenstein creates the monster with the help of electricity, you can only create the burger cupcakes with the help of food coloring. The red makes the ketchup. The yellow makes the mustard. The green makes the lettuce. You can take it one step further by using shredded coconut and green food coloring to make a more crunchy lettuce.Continue to 6 of 7 below.

Toast The Sesame Seeds, Please
If you toast the sesame seeds, it will bring out the nutty sweet flavor of them. Lay them on a cookie sheet and let toast for 10 minutes. Let them cool completely before topping the burger cupcakes. Lightly dampen burger “lids” with water and sprinkle with sesame seeds so they stick a little on top.Continue to 7 of 7 below.

Making The Burger, Hold The Pickles
When vanilla cupcakes are cool, cut them in half horizontal-wise using a bagel knife or a serrated knife to create the bun. For the chocolate cupcakes, cut them in half horizontal-wise and save the cupcake top as the “meat.” You can discard the bottoms of the cupcakes. Or you can save them and use them later for cupcake trifles (cupcakes in a jar).
Use the vanilla cupcake halves as the buns. Layer with the chocolate cupcake tops to make the burger meat.
