This spicy chipotle gravy recipe is perfect served over meatloaf, roast beef, or steak. Don't forget to save some for the mashed potatoes!


  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 green onions (white and light green parts, chopped)
  • 1 clove garlic (minced)
  • 4 cups/1 quart beef broth (chilled)
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon canned​ chipotle pepper in​ ​ adobo (finely chopped)

Steps to Make It

  1. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium-low heat. Add the flour, and cook, stirring constantly, for 5 minutes.

  2. Add the onion and garlic, and cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Slowly whisk in 1 cup of the stock until blended.

  3. Stir in the remaining stock, ketchup, and chipotle pepper, and bring to a simmer, whisking often. Reduce the heat to low, and simmer for 20 minutes, whisking occasionally.

  4. Season to taste with salt and pepper and serve hot.
