Who doesn't love a chocolate-glazed raised doughnut? If you've mastered making doughnuts at home and want to give them a chocolate glaze, this recipe is simple and quick, with no cooking required. It dries to a shiny but soft consistency.

But you don't have to stop with doughnuts. A chocolate glaze works great on bundt cakes, helping keep them moist by sealing them from the air and preventing evaporation. Besides, of course, tasting chocolatey.

Sugar cookies are another ideal vehicle for this chocolate glaze topping. Make them special, and add a few sprinkles. There are plenty of baked goods you may want to top with chocolate glaze, including banana bread, quick breads, cupcakes, and cakes.

Go ahead and lick the spoon -- it's safe. There are no uncooked eggs or other ingredients that pose a food safety problem.

Equipment and Tools for this Recipe

The equipment you'll need starts with an apron. You'll be working with powdered sugar and cocoa powder, two ingredients that are bound to end up on your clothing as well as your counter. You'll need a small bowl, a fork, measuring cups and measuring spoons. For applying the glaze to your baked goods, you can drizzle it from a spoon, or apply it with a spatula or pastry brush.

What You'll Need

  • 3/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons milk (or more)
  • 1/8 teaspoon vanilla extract

How to Make It

  1. In a small bowl, combine the powdered sugar and the cocoa powder.
  2. Using a fork, gradually stir in the milk until the mixture is smooth and glossy and the desired thickness has been reached. You may end up using more or less milk.
  3. If you overdo the liquid, simply add more powdered sugar and cocoa. Try to keep the ratio of powdered sugar to cocoa at 3:1. Use a teaspoon additional at a time to build the consistency.
  1. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  2. Keep the chocolate glaze covered with plastic wrap until ready to use so that the glaze doesn't harden.
  3. Apply the glaze to your pastry with a spatula or by drizzling it from a spoon.
