This is our favorite tartar sauce combination for fried fish or shrimp. If you don't have cornichons, use chopped sour pickle. 


  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 1/2 tablespoon pickle (sour, finely chopped or cornichons)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon capers (chopped)
  • 2 teaspoons mustard (grainy or a good gourmet mustard)
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 pinch black pepper (freshly ground)

Steps to Make It

  1. Combine all ingredients and mix well.

  2. Put in a container, cover, and refrigerate until serving time.
