Experience
The first cup of coffee Derek ever tried came from an airport vending machine. Despite the inauspicious beginning, he has been hooked ever since. Today he enjoys experimenting with different coffee recipes and brewing methods, as well as learning about coffee customs unique to specific parts of the world.
As the Coffee and Tea Expert for The Spruce Eats, Derek researches a wide variety of products, from teapots to commercial espresso machines, and interviews field experts for their insight. He is especially well versed in non-electric brewing devices. At home, he typically makes coffee with the Bodum BRAZIL French Press—a great budget option, especially for those who prefer non-electric brewers.
