Fruits and vegetables are essential for kids' nutrition. But it's no secret that many kids are picky eaters, and fruits and vegetables aren't their first choice of favorite foods. One way to encourage kids who are picky eaters to eat fruits and vegetables is by serving them often. It's also important for kids to see you eating fruits and vegetables. When kids see you modeling good eating habits, they will eventually adopt those same eating habits.

In fact, the very act of being exposed to fruits and vegetables frequently can make kids willing to eat them. In the case of fruits and vegetables, familiarity breeds enjoyment.

How often do your kids get exposed to fruits and vegetables? Take this quiz with them to see how many fruits and vegetables they can identify. Remember, just being able to identify fruits and vegetables is the first step in eating them—for kids and adults.

Most people think this is a vegetable, but it is actually a fruit. And it is probably something even kids who are picky eaters eat every day. That's because it is used to make ketchup.

This fruit comes in hundreds of different sizes, shapes and varieties. You can eat this fruit all by itself, or in dozens of recipes.

If you're a fan of this fruit, you're in luck, because it is in season for several months of the year in most parts of the United States. It's also easy to grow in a backyard garden or container garden. If you want to try your hand at growing this fruit, but you don't have a green thumb, try it in an Aerogarden (compare prices).

You probably eat this vegetable often, but you may not recognize it in this form. This is what this vegetable looks like when it comes right out of the ground.

Sometimes people buy this vegetable already cleaned and cut into "baby" size. This vegetable tastes great raw with dips. It also tastes great with peanut butter on top (lots of people have never tried that combination, but it's quite delicious). This vegetable has a high sugar content and is also high in vitamin A.

This fruit is sweet, juicy and tastes great just by itself. The season for this fruit is in the summer, and it's fairly short in most parts of the country.

A fun outing to enjoy with the kids is going to the farm to pick this fruit. Even if you can't make it to a farm for picking, it's worth buying this fruit at the farm or farmer's market.

During the off-season, I buy this fruit frozen. The frozen version of this fruit can be quite good, especially for certain recipes. I recommend buying the organic version of this fruit.

Fruits and Vegetables Quiz for Kids - Do You Know This Vegetable?

This vegetable may be difficult for you to guess. For starters, most people think this is a fruit. It looks a bit like pink or red celery, but unlike celery, it is almost never eaten raw. That's because this vegetable is very tart and needs to be sweetened in order to be palatable.

Normally, this vegetable is eaten in desserts, like pies, crisps, and cakes. This vegetable is often paired with strawberries. As the old adage goes, what grows together, goes together. And this vegetable grows and ripens at the same time as strawberries. Do you know what this vegetable is?

Fruits and Vegetables Quiz for Kids - Did You Guess Right?

    Rhubarb pie

Did you guess rhubarb? You're right! Rhubarb is often thought of as a fruit, probably because it is typically paired with strawberries in recipes, but it is technically a vegetable. Unlike most vegetables, rhubarb is rarely eaten raw, because it is so tart. Rhubarb is in season in the spring, around the same time as asparagus, early spring greens, and strawberries.

Here are some terrific rhubarb recipes:

    • Rhubarb Cake - This rhubarb coffee cake has a thick crumb topping, underneath which is a layer of rhubarb and a dense cake layer.
    • Strawberry Rhubarb Compote - This is one of those simple, elegant recipes that is easy to prepare and can be used a thousand ways. Try this compote over pancakes, angel food cake or in a trifle or parfait.
    • Strawberry Rhubarb Tart with Chocolate Crust - Strawberries and rhubarb are such a natural pairing, but add chocolate to the mix and you've got an exceptional dessert.
    • Gingered Rhubarb Tart - A thin, sweetened cream cheese layer sits under a jeweled layer of gingery rhubarb in this delectable tart recipe.
    • Strawberry Rhubarb Pie - This double crust pie is the quintessential way to enjoy fresh rhubarb. It goes great with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
    • Rhubarb Ice Cream - Can't find rhubarb ice cream on the menu of your local ice cream store? Make it yourself! This recipe is a real winner.
    • Strawberry Rhubarb Crisp Recipe - The crunchy oatmeal topping is a perfect foil for the warm rhubarb and strawberry filling for this delectable crisp recipe.
