These shaped doughnuts are fried to perfection and glazed with a fabulous chocolate icing! You can use a number of icing flavors for a fun mix.

For the Doughnuts:

  • 1/2 cup evaporated milk

  • 1/2 cup water

  • 2 tablespoons butter

  • 1 large egg, beaten

  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast

  • Oil, for deep-frying (enough to cover the doughnuts)

For the Chocolate Glaze:

  • 2 tablespoons butter

  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder

  • 3 tablespoons hot water

  • 1 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar

  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Steps to Make It

  1. Add ingredients to the bread machine. At the end of the kneading cycle, cover the pan with plastic wrap and transfer to the refrigerator. (Or, transfer the mixture to a lightly greased bowl)

  2. Refrigerate overnight.

  3. Remove the dough to a lightly floured surface and roll to about 1/2-inch thick.

  4. Cut out into doughnut shapes or form strips into knots or cruller shapes. Cover and let rise for about 1 hour.

  5. Fry in oil at 360 F until light and browned. Glaze with the following chocolate icing or use your own favorite icing.

Chocolate or Vanilla Glaze

  1. Melt butter in small saucepan over low heat; add cocoa and water.

  2. Stir constantly until mixture is thick.

  3. Remove from heat; gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla; beat with a whisk until smooth.

  4. Add additional hot water, 1/2 teaspoon at a time, until drizzling consistency.

  5. For vanilla glaze, omit cocoa and add 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla.
