Burgers are the ultimate summer food. And adding interesting ingredients turns them into gourmet burgers! You can cook these burgers over charcoal or gas, inside on a skillet or under the broiler, or in a dual-contact grill. (One is barbecued in the oven!)
However you cook them, there are rules for making the best burgers. The most important tips? Handle the meat gently, don't push down on the burgers while they are cooking or you'll just press out all the juice, and have fun with buns,... toppings, cheeses, and condiments. And always make sure they are cooked to at least 160°F, as measured with a food thermometer, so you don't get sick.
If you have leftover burgers, use them up according to my guidelines in How to Use Leftover Summer Foods.

Wild rice is the surprise gourmet ingredient in this simple three ingredient hamburger recipe. You can serve it however you like. I myself prefer a toasted bun, mustard, mayo, lettuce, and some sliced avocado. Oh, and the salad on the plate next to that luscious burger is My Mother's Potato Salad. Yum.
