Greek Meatballs with Roasted Potatoes

In Greek: μπιφτέκια με πατάτες στο φούρνο, pronounced beef-TEK-yah meh pah-TAH-tes stoh FOOR-no.

The beer in the meatball mix adds a delightful flavor to the burgers which are cooked on top of the potatoes in the oven for a fabulous one-dish family meal. It's the perfect Greek meatball recipe to try and one that differs from the well known, Keftedes | Greek Meatballs

What You'll Need

  • For the Meatballs:
  • 2 - 2 1/4 pounds of beef (ground, single grind)
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 small tomato (grated)
  • 2 teaspoons of salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon of pepper
  • 1 tablespoon of oregano
  • 1/3 pound of bread (stale, 5 1/4 ounces)
  • 1/2 cup of beer
  • 4 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 1 onion (minced)
  • For the Potatoes:
  • 2 3/4 - 3 pounds of potatoes
  • 2-2 lemons (juice of)
  • 3-4 cloves of garlic (cut in thin slices)
  • 1/3 cup of olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon of pepper
  • 2 teaspoons of oregano
  • 1/2 cup of water

How to Make It

Preheat oven to 355F (180C).

Soak the bread in the beer until absorbed.

Combine all burger ingredients in a bowl and knead until well blended. Shape into patties (approximately 12), cover, and set aside.

Peel potatoes and cut into quarters, lengthwise. Place in a roasting pan and top with salt, pepper, oregano, garlic, lemon juice, and olive oil. Add 1/2 cup of water and cook at 355F (180C) for 45 minutes.

Place burgers on top of the potatoes and continue to cook for 45 minutes longer.
