This banana cream pie is a popular meringue topped pie with sliced bananas. Use a regular pie crust, graham cracker crust, or cookie crust for this luscious, creamy pie.

  • 1 (9-inch) baked pie shell, cooled

  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar

  • 1/2 cup sifted all-purpose flour

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • 3 cups milk

  • 3 large egg yolks, slightly beaten

  • 1 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter

  • 2 ripe bananas, thinly sliced

For the Meringue:

  • 3 large egg whites

  • 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar

  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar

Steps to Make It

Make the Pie

  1. Gather the ingredients.

  2. Mix 1/3 cup sugar, flour, and salt in a saucepan; add milk gradually, stirring until smooth. Cook over medium-low heat until mixture boils, stirring constantly.

  3. Mix a small portion of the hot mixture with the beaten egg yolks, and then return the egg mixture to the saucepan and cook for 2 minutes more, stirring constantly. Remove from heat; stir in vanilla and butter. Cool slightly.

  4. Place bananas in the bottom of the cooled shell, top with the cooled filling.

Make the Meringue

  1. Gather the ingredients.

  2. Beat egg whites and cream of tartar until frothy. Add the 1/3 cup sugar gradually. Continue beating egg whites until they hold a glossy peak.

  3. Spoon meringue onto filling, sealing to the edge of crust.

  4. Bake at 375 F for about 10 minutes, or until the meringue nicely browned.

  5. Serve and enjoy.
