We purchased the Le Creuset Classic Whistling Kettle so our reviewer could put it to the test in her kitchen. Keep reading for our full product review.

Whether you’re redoing your kitchen or moving into your first apartment, having a tea kettle that reflects your personality and style can help bring the entire room together. With the Le Creuset Classic Whistling Kettle, you get a traditional tea kettle design that comes in a rainbow of beautiful, rich colors.

But with such a high price tag, how do you know if the kettle will be worth it in the long run? Well, thankfully, we purchased one in the lovely Marseille color and tested it out so you can get a feel for whether it will work for you. Keep reading for our full review of this kettle.

Setup: Have adhesive remover handy

To start, the kettle comes packaged well to avoid any damage. However, one issue we found was that there was a sticker on the inside on the lid. It was difficult to fully remove the adhesive, which was definitely a concern, but after a little scrubbing and a few washes, we got it off.

Our favorite thing about this kettle is that the knobs and whistle are heat-resistant.

Design: Classic and functional

The Le Creuset Kettle has many unique features, the first being its rounded, elegant design. While it doesn’t affect functionality, the attention to detail is obvious. The kettle gives a single-toned whistle when the water is boiling, and we found it easy to flip back the whistler when it’s time to pour water to make tea.

Possibly our favorite thing about this kettle is that the knobs and whistle are heat-resistant. We hate having to scramble to find an oven mitt to open a kettle and pour hot water into our mug, but with this kettle, there’s no need, because the whistle tab and handle remain comfortable to touch, even after the kettle has been on the stove.

Another great feature of this kettle is the handle. It’s held together by stainless steel brackets, and it locks into place in the upright position. That way, it’s secure while you pour. However, the handle can also be pushed into a horizontal position for easy storage or to more easily clean the interior.

One thing to keep in mind is that it can be a little difficult to get the lid off the kettle. While it’s not impossible, it does take some force, which could be a problem if you’re trying to get the lid off while the kettle is still hot.

Material: A marriage of function and aesthetics

While stainless steel is perfect for kettles thanks to its heat conductivity, not everyone wants a plain metal kettle. Luckily, this tea kettle has a layer of vitreous enamel on the inside and outside for a pop of rich color—a signature of Le Creuset. The enamel-coated stainless steel allows the kettle to heat up fast, while the enamel is nonstick, easy-to-clean, and a fun burst of color in your kitchen.

When you combine these high-quality materials with the heat-resistant knobs and sturdy handle, it all adds up to a high-quality kettle that was built to last—and keep looking great doing it!

Performance: Perfect for every stovetop

You’ll be happy to know that this tea kettle can be used on any type of stovetop: gas, electric, ceramic, radiant ring, and induction. Of course, it’s not meant for use in an oven or microwave.

We used this kettle everyday to make coffee in our French press and also for making tea. On our radiant-ring stovetop, it only took a few minutes to heat up enough water for two servings.

Cleaning: Hand wash only

The washing process is pretty simple, but it's not completely effortless. The Le Creuset Classic Whistling Kettle is hand wash only, so we had to break out a kitchen sponge to wash the interior and exterior. However, since it’s only used to heat water and the enamel is nonstick, this task takes a matter of seconds.

Overall, just steer clear of dishwashers and abrasive cleaners, and make sure to empty out the tea kettle after each use, as this will help avoid any limescale build up. By following these steps, you’ll be able to preserve the beautiful enamel for years to come.

Price: High but worth it

Most people probably expect to spend around $20 for a tea kettle, but this one is on the higher end with a price tag of $100—not so surprisingly given the brand’s reputation as a luxury cookware manufacturer.

Considering how sturdy, beautiful, and easy to use this kettle is, we think it’s a worthwhile splurge, especially if you love the look of it. Plus, it comes with a 5-year guarantee to cover manufacturer defects.

Competition: Options for a modest budget

Zeppoli Electric Kettle: If you’re in the market for an electric tea kettle, we love the Zeppoli Electric Kettle. It heats water up fast, and while it’s a little noisy, it’s not much louder than a regular tea kettle. Plus, it has a unique see-through design, so you can watch the water boil. You can typically find this product retailing for around $45, which is a steal compared to the Le Creuset Kettle. However, it’s a completely different aesthetic—more sleek and modern than classic.

OXO BREW Classic Tea Kettle: For around $40, you can get the OXO Brew Classic Tea Kettle. The knob and handle on this kettle are silicone, which helps resist heat so you don’t have to worry about burning yourself. The one drawback here is that there aren’t any color options, but if stainless steel is your thing, this is a simple, no-fuss kettle that you’ll love.

T-fal C76220 Specialty Stainless Steel Coffee and Tea Kettle: For an even more affordable option, this T-fal Stainless Steel Tea Kettle has almost all the same features as the Le Creuset Kettle—for a much lower price. It has an easy-open trigger on the handle, the lid comes off easily, and it has a large capacity of 3 quarts. Plus, this kettle is dishwasher safe! So if you want a plain stainless steel kettle, this one should be a contender.

Final Verdict

A well-designed luxury item.

The Le Creuset Classic Whistling Kettle has lots of helpful features, and its design is undeniably gorgeous, so while it might seem like a lot to pay for a tea kettle, you won’t be disappointed with its looks or performance.
