Easy Mini Burger Buns

This recipe for mini buns can be prepared in the bread machine, by hand, or with your stand mixer. Make them very small for bite-size appetizers or make them a little larger for sliders.

Fill the buns with tiny burgers, seafood salad, roast beef, pulled pork or pulled chicken, or other sandwich fillings. They're perfect for sliders or small appetizers.

For a shinier and firmer top crust, brush the buns with an egg wash (see below) just before baking. If you do add an egg wash, you might want to sprinkle the buns with some sesame seeds.

What You'll Need

  • 1 cup milk (room temperature)
  • 2 tablespoons butter (melted)
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 1/4 cups flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons yeast (instant)

How to Make It

In a small bowl whisk together the milk, melted butter, and egg. Place the milk mixture, flour, sugar, 1 teaspoon salt, and yeast in the bread machine in the order suggested by your bread machine manufacturer.

Run on dough cycle. Alternatively, mix the dough and knead by hand or with a stand mixer with dough hook for about 10 minutes and then cover and let the dough rise in a warm, draft-free place for about 45 minutes, or until doubled in bulk.

Remove the finished dough to a lightly floured surface. Roll half of the dough to approximately 1/4-inch in thickness or slightly more. Cut the dough out with a 1 1/2-inch cutter or larger, as desired. You could make your sandwiches larger using a 2-inch cutter for slider buns.

Repeat with the remaining dough. Arrange the rounds of dough on a lightly greased baking sheet about 2 to 3 inches apart. Cover with a kitchen towel and let them rise in a warm, draft-free place until doubled in size, about 30 minutes.

Heat the oven to 350° F (180° C/Gas 4).

Bake in the preheated oven for 15 to 18 minutes, or until browned.

Brush the tops with a little butter while they're hot. Let the buns cool on a rack.

Split the cooled buns and fill as desired.

Tips and Variations

  • Egg Wash - Whisk an egg white with 1 tablespoon of water and brush lightly over the buns just before baking. 
  • Sesame Seed or Poppy Seed Topping - Whisk an egg white with 1 tablespoon of water. Brush lightly over the risen dough rounds and then sprinkle with sesame seeds or poppy seeds. Bake as directed.
