Is there anything better than Nutella? We don't think so—unless, of course, it's French toast stuffed with Nutella.

Take your plain ole French toast to the next level by sandwiching a generous layer of the dreamy chocolate-hazelnut spread between two slices of sweet bread. Top it all with raspberries or strawberries, powdered sugar, and whipped cream. Trust us, you won't be missing the maple syrup at all.

The recipe sounds super complicated and decadent and while it's definitely rich, it's not hard to make at all. When you break down this recipe, it's just bread, an easy French toast egg mixture, and plain old Nutella. You can use any kind of sliced bread you want, but a nice thick one like brioche or challah gives the best depth of flavor and best absorbs the batter. Since the recipe is so simple, you need the best quality ingredients.

  • 8 slices brioche bread, or other sweet and rich bread, such as King’s Hawaiian or challah, set out to dry for a few hours or overnight

  • 4 large eggs

  • 1/3 cup whole milk

  • 2 tablespoons sugar

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 3/4 cup Nutella, or other chocolate hazelnut spread

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, for greasing the griddle

  • Raspberries, to taste, for garnish

  • Whipped cream, to taste, for garnish

  • Confectioners' sugar, to taste, for garnish

Steps to Make It

  1. Gather the ingredients.

  2. Whisk together the eggs, whole milk, sugar, and vanilla extract in a medium-sized bowl. Pick a size that will fit the bread easily when you are ready to dip them.

  3. Take a slice of bread and smear it with about one-fourth of the Nutella. Top that slice with another piece of bread. Repeat with the remaining slices until you have four Nutella sandwiches.

  4. Heat a griddle or large nonstick pan on medium-high heat and grease with the butter.

  5. Dip each sandwich into the egg mixture, coating both sides of the sandwich completely. Dip again if desired.

  6. Place the sandwiches on the griddle and turn the heat down to medium-low. Cook for about 2 minutes or until golden brown. Flip and cook for another 2 minutes on the other side until golden brown and all the egg has been cooked through.

  7. Top with whipped cream, confectioners' sugar, and raspberries.

  • Don't overstuff the bread with the Nutella. When it gets hot, the spread will start to leak out of the sides and burn along the edges of the French toast.
  • You can use skim milk or a non-dairy milk like almond milk or coconut milk by substituting at a one-to-one ratio. The whole milk adds a nice rich flavor, but you won't miss it if you are dairy free.

Recipe Variation

  • If you want to take things to the next level, try whipping the Nutella with some softened cream cheese. This will give you a nice little tangy flavor along with the chocolaty goodness.
