This peach dump cake recipe is a great cooking project to make with the kids. A cross between a cobbler and a cake, it is made with yellow cake mix, cream cheese, canned peaches, and instant vanilla pudding.

Don't let its name—dump cake—put you off. All that means is it's an easy-peasy recipe that produces a moist cake with great flavor.

In most dump cake recipes, the cake mix is poured over the fruit in a pan. This version involves a little more mixing and less "dumping" but it is still easy and delicious.


  • 1 (15.25-ounce) yellow cake mix
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 (3.5-ounce) package instant vanilla pudding
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 (26-ounce) can drained sliced peaches (reserve 3 tablespoons of the syrup)
  • 1 (8-ounce) cream cheese (softened)
  • 1 cup white sugar

Steps to Make It

  1. Gather the ingredients.

  2. Heat the oven to 350 F. Spray a 13x9-inch baking dish with cooking spray.

  3. In a large bowl, beat the cake mix, oil, eggs, pudding mix, and water with an electric mixer until smooth. Pour into prepared pan.

  4. Layer drained peaches on top of the batter.

  5. In a small bowl, beat the cream cheese, sugar, and 3 tablespoons of the reserved peach syrup with an electric mixer until smooth. Spread over peaches.

  6. Bake 50 to 60 minutes.

  7. Remove from the oven and serve warm or let cool completely and accompany with ice cream or sweetened whipped cream.

Recipe Variations

  • You can alter the flavor of this dump cake by changing the fruit and cake mix you use and, in this recipe, the pudding.
  • Instead of yellow or white cake mix, try using chocolate with instant chocolate pudding and canned cherry pie filling for a spin on Black Forest cake. Or try white cake mix with white chocolate pudding mix and canned mandarin oranges (drained and 3 tablespoons syrup reserved) for a Creamsicle flavor.
  • Fresh fruits can be used, but they will need more sugar and probably should sit for a while sprinkled with sugar before assembling the cake to let the juices come out.

How Dump Cakes Got Their Name

A dump cake is one of the easiest to make because it requires very little mixing. It gets its name from the action of "dumping" canned fruit (often cherries and pineapple, but all fruit will work) in the bottom of a baking dish. And then dumping a box of typically yellow or white cake on top of the fruit. The concoction is dotted with slices of butter and baked. The cake mix forms a buttery crust over a layer of sweet fruit, much like a cobbler.
