This old-fashioned dessert made without milk or eggs was especially popular in the 1930s. Because of its economical ingredients, it's also sometimes referred to as Depression Era or War Cake.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups raisins
- 1 cup cold water
- 1/2 cup cold water
- 1/4 cup shortening
- 1 cup white sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
- 2 tablespoons hot water
- 2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
Steps to Make It

In a heavy saucepan, bring raisins and 1 cup water to a boil. Reduce heat to low and continue cooking 10 minutes longer.

Cream shortening and sugar. Stir in cooked raisins, 1/2 cup water, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, salt, and baking soda dissolved in hot water. Beat in flour. Pour batter into greased and floured 9 x 13 x 2-inch pan.

Bake at 350 F (175 C) for 25 minutes.
