Use your favorite pizza crust recipe to make a deep dish or thin crust pizza with a tasty topping of leftover pulled pork and barbecue sauce. The list of ingredients might seem long, but you may substitute a ready-made crust for homemade, and instead of homemade sauce, use about 1/2 cup of your favorite bottled barbecue sauce.

I've updated the recipe to add instructions for an optional homemade pizza crust. Feel free to use a prepared crust or another recipe or this bread machine beer pizza dough.

What You'll Need

  • For the Homemade Pizza Crust:
  • 1 envelope active dry yeast (about 2 1/4 teaspoons)
  • 1 cup water (warm, about 105 F to 110 F)
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 2 1/4 to 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • For the Sauce:
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 clove garlic (finely minced)
  • 2 tablespoons onion (finely minced)
  • 3/4 cup ketchup
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/3 cup cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar (packed, light or dark)
  • Dash salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper (ground)
  • Dash cayenne pepper
  • For the Toppings:
  • 1 to 2 plum tomatoes (thinly sliced)
  • 1 cup pulled pork (chopped leftover)
  • 1/2 to 3/4 cup red onion (thinly sliced)
  • 1/2 cup peppers (thinly sliced)
  • Optional: black olives (sliced)
  • Optional: jalapeno peppers (sliced)
  • 4 ounces mozzarella (shredded)
  • 2 to 4 ounces cheddar cheese (shredded, mild, or a combination of Cheddar and Monterey Jack cheeses)

How to Make It

  1. Pour the warm water into a cup and sprinkle the yeast over the top. Add the sugar; stir and let stand for about 10 minutes.
  2. Combine 2 1/4 cup of the flour and the salt in a mixing bowl. Add the olive oil and the water and yeast mixture. Stir to make a stiff dough and turn it out onto a floured surface. Knead, for about 5 to 7 minutes, adding more flour if necessary.
  3. Gather the dough into a ball and put it in an oiled bowl. Turn to oil all sides. Cover with a kitchen towel and let it rise for about 30 minutes.
  1. While the dough is rising, prepare the sauce.
  2. In a saucepan over medium heat, saute onion in olive oil until tender. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute longer. Add the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, brown sugar, salt, and black and cayenne peppers. Bring to a simmer; reduce heat to low and cook, stirring frequently, until thickened.
  3. Roll and stretch the dough to fit a regular or deep dish pizza pan.
  4. Spread about 1/2 cup of the sauce over the crust. Top with the pulled pork, tomatoes, onion, bell pepper, and other toppings. Sprinkle the cheeses over all.
  5. Bake pizza at 425 F for about 20 minutes or until crust is lightly browned, or follow the directions for your particular pizza crust recipe and method.

Makes a 12- to 14-inch pizza.

Tips and Variations

  • Replace the pulled pork with shredded chicken or beef.
  • Add thin strips of bell pepper to the toppings.
