This is a delicious fudge-like chocolate frosting, and it's easy to make when you're in a hurry. It's boiled for just one minute and made with ingredients you probably already have on hand.

This frosting is perfect for a simple sheet cake, firming up nicely for easy slicing. It can also be drizzled over a Bundt cake or tube cake. The recipe can be doubled for a thicker layer of frosting.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk (whole, evaporated, or lower fat are all fine)
  • 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Steps to Make It

  1. In a small saucepan, combine the butter, sugar, and milk; bring to a boil. Boil for 1 minute. Remove from heat and stir in the chocolate chips and vanilla.

  2. Beat frosting with an electric mixer until it begins to stiffen to a spreadable consistency. Don't overbeat or it will become too firm, like fudge. Pour it over the cake and spread quickly.

  3. If the frosting hardens and becomes difficult to spread, add a little hot water or dip your spatula or knife in hot water as you spread it over the cake.
