Sausages all by themselves are a great meal. After all, hotdogs are a mild sausage, and who doesn't enjoy eating a hotdog at a baseball game, slathered with mustard and pickle relish? Sausages are really excellent in recipes that use fewer ingredients because of the complexity of flavor they add.

There are many different types of sausages, along with bulk sausage. To learn more about them, make sure to look at my Sausage Types Chart. Using this chart, you'll know which sausages will complement the other flavors in your meal. Besides, do you really know the difference between Polish sausage, Bratwurst, and Kielbasa?

If a recipe calls for bulk sausage, you can just purchase your favorite type of link sausage, remove the casings, and crumble the sausage. Also, any favorite recipe that calls for ground beef or other ground meats, or chopped ham can usually be made with sausage.

Be sure to carefully follow the storage, cooking, and serving instructions on the packages of sausages you purchase. If a sausage is raw, it must be cooked to 155 degrees Fahrenheit, until the juices are no longer pink. Fully cooked, smoked, and cured sausages generally taste better if gently heated, but are usually safe to eat right out of the package. Read the instructions to be sure!
