Nothing says summer quite like strawberries. Yet, when these sweet red berries are surrounded by a fresh squeeze of lime and a lively dash of mint, propped up by a pretty in pink Rosé wine in a tasty sangria, you can bet the dog days are here to stay!
This particular mint sangria recipe finds its flavor footing in the limeade-like synergy of taking the tart citrus and rubbing it up against the decidedly sweet side of the fresh strawberry. The wine, soda, and mint are just the backdrop.
- 1 750 mL bottle of Rosé wine (dry)
- 1 cup strawberries (sliced, tops removed)
- 4 cups lemon-lime soda
- 3 limes (squeeze juice of two limes, keep one lime thinly sliced)
- 2 to 3 tablespoons sugar (to taste)
- 2 tablespoons mint (fresh)
- Place the sliced strawberries, the juice of two limes, and the sliced lime in a sangria pitcher.
- Add the wine.
- Roll the mint sprigs in your hands to release the herb's fragrance and flavor. Then, using sharp kitchen shears gently cut the mint into thin strips and place in the pitcher.
- Add sugar and soda and stir.
- Fill the pitcher with ice just prior to serving. Garnish with any remaining mint leaves and sliced strawberries.
More Sangria Making Tips
The Wine. Rosé wines are ideal for summer sangrias. These pink wines come in a range of styles, from sweet to dry and the best for this particular recipe are the drier Rosés. To find those, look for a wine from southern France, Spain, or Italy.
Add to the Citrus. Give your sangria a lively citrus character by building on the lime and soda. Do so by adding sliced lemon and lime to the mix. This brings in more color and heightens the citrus-infused flavors at the same time.
Fresh Strawberries Are Key. If it is summer and you're making this sangria, do yourself a favor and choose fresh strawberries. After all, the fruit is the signature flavor of the drink. There really is no good excuse for using frozen strawberries in any strawberry sangria recipe during berry season.
Play With Your Mint. There are many varieties of mint available and you can have a lot of fun with different mints in this recipe. Peppermint and spearmint are natural options, but if you have chocolate mint, pineapple mint, or any of those other unique mints in your garden, toss them in as well. They will add an interesting twist to the sangria's flavor.
If you have to, raid a friend's mint garden. Just be sure to offer them a glass of sangria.
