Sweet onions and cheese give this simple cornbread bursts of mouth-watering flavor. The onions are sautéed then combined with the cornbread batter, sour cream, and shredded cheese. Pair this with a juicy steak and your taste buds will be forever grateful.


  • 1/2 cup chopped sweet onion

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter

  • 1 package corn muffin or cornbread mix

  • Eggs, liquid, etc, according to muffin directions

  • 1/2 cup sour cream

  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese, or American cheese

Steps to Make It

  1. Heat the oven to 400 F.

  2. Grease an 8-inch square baking pan.

  3. In a skillet over medium-low heat, melt the butter; cook onion until tender, but do not brown.

  4. In a mixing bowl, prepare mix according to package directions.

  5. Pour into the prepared baking pan.

  6. Sprinkle with the cooked onion. Combine sour cream and shredded cheese; spoon over the batter.

  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 25 to 30 minutes, until done.
