The Hollywood (sometimes called a Raspberry Smash) is a popular vodka fruit drink that is very easy to make. It is tall and refreshing and is a casual cocktail that is perfect for any occasion.
This cocktail has an interesting mix of fruit flavors. While the combination of raspberries and pineapple is not very common, it works surprisingly well. The light and dark fruit have a sort of yin and yang relationship and it is one that can appeal to many different tastes.
If you prefer, the Hollywood Martini has all of the same flavors, it is simply served as an "up" drink. Both drinks are ideal for summer parties, cookouts or anytime you want a simple, fruity and delicious cocktail.
1 1/2 ounces vodka
1 ounce raspberry liqueur
3 to 5 ounces pineapple juice, to taste
Pineapple wedge, garnish
Gather the ingredients.
Pour the liquors into a collins glass filled with ice.
Fill with pineapple juice.
Garnish with a pineapple wedge. Serve and enjoy.
Choose Your Vodka
The Hollywood is one of those cocktails where you don't necessarily need to use your best vodka, but it doesn't hurt to make a good decision.
I actually enjoy using this recipe when testing out new brands because it's always nice to see how a certain vodka plays off the contrast of fruits. For that reason, I would suggest you try it in your exploration of craft vodkas.
If you are on a budget, you will find that the Hollywood is a drink that will work with your cheap drink schemes as well. There are a number of great tasting and inexpensive vodkas available that will make an excellent Hollywood.
The Raspberry Liqueur
When it comes to raspberry liqueurs, Chambord is often the first brand that comes to mind. It is an excellent option for the Hollywood and if you already have it in stock, you are one step ahead.
That said, you can search the liquor store shelves for alternatives because this is one flavor that has hidden gems. Raspberry is a popular liqueur flavor for craft distillers to play with and you local distillery may be producing one close to home.
If you are looking for luxury, try to find a bottle of Chase Raspberry Liqueur. This one is actually cheaper than Chambord and has a sweet, delectable flavor. On the budget-friendly side, Hiram Walker Fruja Raspberry is a favorite
The Pineapple Juice
As with all fruit juices, use fresh pineapple if you can. An electric juicer will make quick work of the whole fruit.
If you're buying pineapple juice, look for resealable bottles or small cans unless you are hosting a party. Pineapple juice from large cans is often a waste of perfectly good juice. If you do purchase a large can, have a container ready to store the leftover.
How Strong Is the Hollywood Cocktail?
The Hollywood can be a very gentle drink. Of course, the amount of juice you add is going to play a big role in determining this cocktail's strength.
If we use an 80-proof vodka with Chambord and pour about 4 ounces of pineapple to fill the glass, the Hollywood would be a mild 10 percent ABV (20 proof). That is close to the average glass of wine.
