Watermelon and vodka, they make a perfect pair for summer parties and you can make your own watermelon-infused vodka at home. It's easy and if you like, you can even make your own drunken watermelon!

Whether you choose to add the watermelon to the vodka or the vodka to the watermelon, this is a fun DIY project. All you need is your favorite vodka and a fresh watermelon.

The vodka doesn't have to be the best or the most expensive in your liquor cabinet. Instead, I would choose one of the budget-friendly vodkas that have a smooth, clean taste. With the addition of the watermelon, you won't notice the difference or break the bank while experimenting.

How to Make Watermelon-Infused Vodka

Watermelon-infused vodka is as easy as any other infusion and is ready in about a week. This is a great way to use up leftover watermelon after a summer picnic.

If you like, add other fruits like mango or berries to the infusion. Herbs like basil and lemongrass are nice flavor pairing options as well. When doing these flavor experiments, begin with a smaller batch and taste it regularly after about 3 days. Once you perfect your custom vodka, then it's time to go big and make a full bottle.

  1. Place the watermelon in the bottom of a clean quart-sized infusion jar with a tight seal.
  2. Pour the vodka over the fruit and shake a few times.
  3. Seal the lid tight and store the jar in a cool, dark place for 4-6 days.
  4. Test the flavor of the infusion every day, beginning on the third day.
  5. Once the watermelon flavor is to taste, strain the watermelon from the vodka. You may need to strain twice or use a cheese cloth to remove all of the fruit and seeds.,
  1. Wash the jar and return the flavored vodka to it.
  2. Store as you would any other vodka.


A Few Tips for the Infusion

  1. A quart-sized jar will hold almost 950ml, so that leaves plenty of room for the fruit.
  2. It is best to cut the rind off the melon to maximize space and flavor.
  3. If you end up having less watermelon than you'd like, leave the infusion for a few extra days to strengthen the flavor. 
  4. There are many fancy infusion jars available. I happen to like the ease of an old-fashioned mason jar. They're cheap, have a wide mouth and useful for other projects.
  5. If you save the original vodka bottle, reuse it for your finished infusion. Clean it out, remove the label and even create your own custom label. It makes a great hostess gift!
  6. Don't be afraid to branch out! This recipe is just as good with white rum or silver tequila.


Cocktails for Your New Watermelon Vodka

How to Make a Drunken Watermelon

Do you have a whole watermelon that you want to make into a boozy summer treat?

Then it may be time to create a vodka-infused watermelon!

This easy project is fun for parties and takes less than a day to create. Just be sure that you let guests know that the watermelon slices have vodka in them so no one's surprised. Make sure to keep the kids away from this plate!

  1. Draw a circle in the size of the watermelon with a market. Make sure it is slightly larger than the widest part of the vodka bottle's neck.
  2. Cut around the circle with a large knife, digging deep into the melon's flesh. Remove this chunk of rind and flesh.
  3. Use a spoon to scoop out enough melon so the bottle's neck can fit inside the hole.
  4. Open the bottle of vodka and quickly place it upside down in the hole of the watermelon. It should fit securely and be able to stabilize the bottle.
  5. Allow the vodka and melon to rest for 4-12 hours. The vodka will slowly filter into the watermelon's flesh as it rests. It may not use the all of the vodka as the amount will depend on how juicy and large the melon is.
  6. When you're ready, quickly remove the vodka bottle. Be ready to use your finger as a stopper as you bring the bottle upright to prevent a big spill!
  7. Place your vodka-infused watermelon in the refrigerator to chill for at least a few hours.
  8. Ready to serve? Simply cut the watermelon into slices as you normally would.

A Few Tips for the Drunken Watermelon

  1. I recommend choosing a vodka in a normal, tall bottle (similar to Belvedere's bottle). This technique requires balance and a long neck. Many of the fancier vodka bottles simply won't work.
  1. Wrap the bottom of your watermelon with a large towel (bath or beach towels work great). This will prevent the melon from sliding around on the table while you work with it. It will also pick up any spills that may happen.
  2. The same technique can be used with other melons. Watermelon are often bigger, so these will take more vodka than a cantaloupe or honeydew melon.
