Some of the foods for which Greece is most well known (moussaka, pastitsio, baklava) are high in calories, but it's important to remember that these are generally dishes reserved for special occasions or eaten at a favorite Greek restaurant, and not everyday fare. Many Greek main dishes are one-dish meals, accompanied by a low-calorie salad and perhaps some cheese or yogurt.
Greek home cooking on a daily basis relies heavily on fresh vegetables, fruits, beans, herbs and spices, and olive oil. Simple cooking techniques and much less emphasis on meat dishes with or without heavy cream toppings, and syrupy sweets are not only healthier but also bring the calorie count down.
